Everything Fades Sometime
They spend their last days together, waiting. They know everything; now they just pass the time while the players make their moves.

And in those days, squatting in a warehouse with the wind whistling outside, Mello can let go for once. Knowing you’re doomed allows a certain freedom.

Mello and Matt ride out together, fast like they want it all over with but really they want to live. They stay up late eating junk and watching movies, and at last falling down together.

They’re just waiting for the leaves to turn, waiting for that call that says: we’re ending now.

His new roomate was skittish, and geeky, and, Mello laughed to see, had blue bunnies on his pyjamas. Matt was avoiding his eyes.

“Those are so cute,” Mello insisted. “Did you pick them yourself?”

Matt gave him a nervous glance. “Why, you jealous?” He muttered, but Mello heard and clapped his hands in delight.

“Oh, I am.”

“Fine,” Matt said, and began to strip, throwing bunnied joy at Mello. “You wear them.”

Mello stared. “Oh, I like you. I think I will.”

Matt gave him a look like he was crazy. Too bad. One of them would sleep warm tonight.

Unlike Matt, Mello is a naturally touchy-feely person.

It’s not till one night, too close together and too damn wiggly that Matt can even imagine this is not Mello’s mere affection.

Because boys just don’t go around kissing boys, not even Mello.

And when Matt’s stunned appearance is taken for distaste, and Mello moves away...

Matt’s not a touchy-feely person, but some things can only be said one way.

Games Pay
When they play board games, L cheats. Mello knows life’s not fair - Near beats him at every damn test they take, which isn’t right, he works so hard, Near never worked that hard. Life’s not, but L oughta be. If L only followed the rules, Mello could win. He knows it.

He thinks about cheating late at night, when he can’t study any more and his mind won’t shut up... but he won’t play L’s game. It’s not just that he wants to win; he wants to win fair, because he’s best.

But in the end, he’s still number two.
