if only I weren't so cheap, I would've just bought the CDs in the first place
I am probably killing my record player playing a bent record. I don't think I would've noticed except that the needles bobbing up and down... I really need to get all the Cure albums on CD, because every so often I need to geek out and play them again. I can't play the music videos anymore either, because they're only on tape and we no longer have a VCR!

Oh, technological progress. And of course it would only actually skip-and-repeat on my favourite song.

This is the latest lot of Mello drabbles... One Amazing Thing is inspired by an EE Cummings poem (Sweet Spring). Which is not my favourite EE Cummings poem, but it's up there. Who needs a one word prompt when you can turn it into a whole poem? And M, Not the Famous Detective probably only makes sense if you've read Another Note.

One Amazing Thing

It’s springtime the first time they do it, tumbling together on the grass. Mello’s high from a win, sneaking and pouncing on Matt who was just sitting there not bothering anyone, thank you very much.

“Mello, you dick, get off!”

There’s a scramble, and Matt, well and truly caught, is breathing heavy. The ground is damp and Mello’s hair is lit up with the sun behind; Mello always was beautiful.

Matt surprises himself, pulling Mello down, but Matt never cares what anyone thinks.

Two boys tangled in sunshine think yes, and maybe in that Mello finds peace for a time.

And Then There Was One

“You could come too.”

Matt looks up at Mello; his face pensive. “Yeah. Mello, I’m not giving this up a moment before I have to.”

Mello’s gaze darkens. “What’s this? Your free bandwidth?”

“Yeah, I wanna be comfortable. So what? What’s out there, Mello? Can you really do any more on your own?”

Mello turns back to his packing. “Beats doing nothing and having my face rubbed in it. I can’t live like this, Matt.”

Matt doesn’t think he can deny that. “Well, hey. You’re gonna need an inside man anyway.”

There’s a smile then, from Mello. And that’s goodbye.

M, Not the Famous Detective

Mello has a story, but it’s not the one he’s writing. He’s trying to understand, trying to understand L, understand his own failure.

He’s writing a story. He’s not scared of it, and he knows he tells a better story than Near ever could, because he cares more, and besides, Near never knew these stories.

They’re what Mello has and Near doesn’t. Because Near has everything else, and Near will have the victory, and Near will get the name.

Mello knows things no-one else does. He can leave them behind, when he’s gone.

He knows how this one ends.

Just Nightmares

Shinigami. If Mello gives him that, will Near even believe him? It sounds crazy in his own head, but Mello’s been there, he’s seen... ain’t no way he’s ever going to forget.

Death gods. Monsters. Hell, it’s as good an explanation as any. Better than believing Kira really is a god, that this really is justice. No: there’s your monster. The shinigami are just nightmares.

He’ll tell Near; it won’t matter if he looks like a fool, because he’s right. He knows what this damn curse is, even if he doesn’t know just whose.

But he’s going to find out.
